The detail consists of an officer in plain clothes officers in brightly colored clothing crossing the street legally while uniformed colleagues pick off drivers who don't yield to them.
The stakeouts are conducted at various intersections throughout the borough -- particularly in the congested commercial district near the George Washington Bridge.
Summonses carry fines of $230 — and 2 points off your driver's license.
At the same time, officers won't hesitate to ticket jaywalkers.
In some cases, they will give the offender a safety pamphlet or clip-on reflector — which can go on anything from jackets to backpacks to purses to briefcases — to make them more visible to motorists.
They also conduct seminars to educate citizens on how to remain aware of their surroundings while walking to increase their safety. Seniors and schoolchildren get particular attention.
“Safety is a top priority for the Fort Lee Police Department,” Police Chief Keith Bendul said. “Individual officers in marked patrol cars, stealth cars and unmarked cars are employed in various traffic enforcement details 24/7/365.”
